How did Super Mario Bros. teach you to play without a single word?
Its first level has no instructions. A mushroom that is hard to dodge, a weak first enemy and one clever choice about Mario's size do the teaching.
▶ Start the storySuper Mario Bros. never says a word about how to play it, and yet players figure it out. That is not luck. In its era, when tutorials on gameplay were rare, the designers used level design to teach: the first level was built so that players would be forced to explore the game's mechanics to get anywhere.
Shigeru Miyamoto said he made the first level, World 1-1, to contain everything a player needs to gradually and naturally understand what they are doing. Rather than throwing obstacles at a newcomer, it lays out the game's hazards through repetition, iteration and escalation: you meet something, you meet it again, then you meet it in a harder form.
Step 1: Repetition
You meet an idea in a safe setting
Step 2: Iteration
You meet it again, a little changed
Step 3: Escalation
Then you meet a harder version
The details are clever. The team wanted players to learn that mushrooms are different from Goombas and are good for you, so in World 1-1 the first mushroom is hard to avoid. They also had Mario begin each level as small Mario, so that getting a mushroom felt more gratifying and you could see and feel that he had grown. And they decided, after finishing the game, to open with a simple, easy-to-defeat enemy rather than a Koopa Troopa.
Miyamoto said the payoff comes once you understand the mechanics: you can play more freely and it becomes your game.

Surprising fact · The first mushroom is placed so it is hard to avoid, to teach that mushrooms are good.
