What is the beat of a song, and how is it different from the rhythm?

The beat is the pulse you tap your foot to, and the rhythm is what the music does on top of it. Even the word "beat" is used for six different things.

▶ Start the story

The beat is the steady pulse of a piece of music: the basic unit of musical time, a regularly repeating event. The usual test is the one you already know. It is the rhythm you would tap your toes to, or the numbers a musician counts while playing.

The rhythm is something different. Rhythm is the pattern the music actually plays, a repeating sequence of stressed and unstressed beats, divided into bars. The beat does not even have to be played out loud: unlike the rhythm, the performers imply it and the listener expects it.

Then comes meter, which is how the beats group together. Meter measures how many pulses fall between regularly returning accents, and for it to exist some pulses have to be accented more than others. Say a clock's ticks out loud and you will probably turn them into tick-tock-tick-tock without being asked. Two beats grouped together give duple meter, three give triple meter. In the common count of "1 2 3 4", beat 1 is the strongest, beat 3 is next, and beats 2 and 4 are the weaker ones, called off-beats.

From a pulse to a bar
  1. Step 1: Pulse

A regularly repeating event: the beat

  2. Step 2: Accent

Some pulses are stressed more than others

  3. Step 3: Meter

Pulses grouped in twos or threes

  4. Step 4: Bar

    Counted 1 2 3 4, starting on the downbeat

So the beat is the pulse, the rhythm is what happens on top of it, and the meter is how the pulses are grouped and accented.

  3. 3.In a bar counted 1 2 3 4, which beats are the off-beats?

Recap

The beat is the pulse, the rhythm is the pattern on top of it, and the meter is how the pulses are grouped.

💡 A trick to remember it · Beat is the heartbeat, rhythm is the tune you hum on it, meter is how many heartbeats you count before the stress comes back.

Surprising fact · Different concert crowds clap on beats 1 and 3 or on beats 2 and 4, two ways of hearing the same pulse.
