How did Wolfgang Beltracchi fool the art world with 'lost' paintings and a fake family collection?

He did not copy famous paintings. He painted new ones and invented the history that made them real.

Wolfgang Beltracchi fooled the art world by not copying anything. He painted new works in the style of famous artists, claimed they were lost paintings known only from old documents, and invented a family collection to explain where they had been. Beltracchi is a German former art who has admitted to forging hundreds of paintings in an international netting millions of euros.

With his wife Helene, he sold forgeries of alleged works by Max Ernst, Heinrich Campendonk, Fernand Léger and Kees van Dongen, among others. Because the paintings were new, nobody could compare them with a known original. He made up titles and motives, or claimed that a painting was a lost work known only by its title in old documents or catalogues.

The paper trail did the rest. He and his wife created a false , claiming that Helene's grandfather, the industrialist Werner Jägers, had been friends with the Jewish art dealer Alfred Flechtheim in the 1920s. When the story was questioned, they delivered photographs seemingly of Helene's grandmother with the paintings in the background. Beltracchi himself had made them with an antique camera and film, with Helene dressed as her own grandmother.

How the Beltracchi scheme worked
  1. Step 1: Paint something new

In the style of a famous artist, with an invented title

  2. Step 2: Call it a lost work

Known only from old documents or catalogues

  3. Step 3: Invent a collection

A grandfather who knew a Jewish art dealer

  4. Step 4: Fake the proof

Staged photographs with the paintings in the background

  5. Step 5: A wrong paint tube

    exposes a fake Campendonk

The scheme ended with a single pigment. In 2006 he sold Red Picture with Horses, supposedly a 1914 painting by Heinrich Campendonk, and in 2008 a scientific analysis showed it contained , which was not yet available in 1914. He and Helene were arrested on 27 August 2010 in Freiburg.

Recap

Beltracchi's fakes had no original to compare with, so they were caught by checking the paint and the story.

💡 A trick to remember it · He faked the past, not the picture: new paint, old story, one wrong tube.

Surprising fact · He made old-looking photographs himself, with his wife dressed as her own grandmother.
