How do car brakes stop you, and what does ABS add?

Stamp hard on the pedal and a system can ease and reapply the brakes faster than most drivers ever could, to stop the wheels locking.

▶ Start the story

Car brakes stop you by turning your motion into heat. Most brakes press two surfaces together, and the friction between them converts the of the moving car into heat. In a modern brake, your foot pushes on a , and ultimately a piston presses a brake pad against a brake disc, which slows the wheel.

From pedal to stopped wheel
  1. Step 1: Foot on the pedal

The pedal pushes on the .

  2. Step 2: pressure

A piston presses the brake pad against the disc.

  3. Step 3: Friction makes heat

of the car turns into heat.

  4. Step 4: ABS watches

It stops the wheel from locking up so the tyre keeps its grip.

Anti-lock braking, or ABS, adds a defence against the worst thing that can happen when you brake hard: a locked wheel. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up during braking, which keeps the tyres in tractive contact with the road and lets the driver keep more control of the car. It automates what skilled drivers once did by hand, in techniques called and , but it works at a much faster rate than most drivers could manage.

There is a surprise in the history. Early anti-lock experiments were on aircraft. In 1920 the French pioneer Gabriel Voisin tried modulating the pressure on his aircraft brakes, because on a plane is nearly impossible. In testing, braking improved by 30%, because pilots could apply full brakes immediately instead of slowly increasing pressure to find the skid point.

ABS is not magic. It generally decreases stopping distances on dry and some slippery surfaces, but on loose gravel or snow it may significantly increase braking distance, while still improving steering control.

Recap

Brakes turn motion into heat, and ABS stops a wheel from locking so you keep both grip and steering.

💡 A trick to remember it · Brakes burn off your speed as heat; ABS taps them faster than your foot could, so the wheels never freeze.

Surprising fact · Early anti-lock experiments were on aircraft, not cars.
