What is 'food noise', and do GLP-1 drugs quiet it?

Many patients say the constant chatter about food went quiet, but as of late 2025 only one unpublished study with a validated scale had shown the drugs reduce it.

Food noise is the name some people give to persistent, about food, even when there is no shortage of it. It is not the same as being hungry: evidence suggests it is distinct from hunger, food addiction and food preoccupation, though research is still in an early phase. And do GLP-1 drugs quiet it? Many patients say they do, but the evidence so far is mostly anecdotal. As of late 2025 only one unpublished study, using a , had shown reduced food noise on GLP-1 drugs.

The experience is described in human terms. Patients report constantly ruminating about when to eat, whether they are eating the right foods or amounts, or having self-recriminating thoughts about their relationship with food. These thoughts have a high and can cause distress, and it has been suggested that food noise may be a reason some people struggle to lose weight. Many patients on GLP-1 drugs have said they did not register the constant mental chatter about food until it was gone.

The phrase is new. Its origin is unknown, but it first appeared in a Google search in 2006, and searches rose markedly in 2022, possibly because more people were using GLP-1 drugs for weight loss. Researchers have since proposed definitions and built questionnaires, such as a five-item Food Noise Questionnaire.

Hunger, by contrast, is a sensation that motivates the consumption of food, typically appearing after a few hours without eating. Why the drugs might change the noise is unclear; some scientists suggest they act on brain pathways that affect appetite or reward signaling.

Hunger and food noise are not the same

Hunger

  • A sensation that motivates eating
  • Appears after a few hours without food
  • Related to contractions of the empty stomach

Food noise

  • Persistent, about food
  • Present even when food is secure
  • High ; research is early

Recap

Food noise is thoughts, not hunger; the evidence that GLP-1 drugs quiet it is so far mostly anecdotal and early.

💡 A trick to remember it · Hunger is the stomach talking; food noise is the mind talking, and only one measured study has listened so far.

Surprising fact · The term first appeared in a Google search in 2006, and searches jumped in 2022.
