rise in UK motor fuel prices in the 12 months to September 2026

Which one is it?

As of October 2026, UK prices are rising at 3.5% a year. The Office for National Statistics reported that the (CPI) rose by 3.5% in the 12 months to September 2026, up from 3.1% in August. Inflation is the speed at which prices climb, so a higher figure means that climb has quickened, not that prices are falling back. The Bank of England's , which meets eight times a year, sets to bring inflation to, or keep it at, a 2% target.

Most of the recent push came from the pump. Transport, and motor fuels in particular, made the largest upward contribution to the monthly change in September. Fuel prices were 29.8% higher than a year before, and the average price of petrol, 169.5 pence per litre, was the highest since August 2022. The Bank says protracted conflict in the Middle East has contributed to further rises in crude and refined energy prices.

The UK is not alone. Eurostat put euro-area inflation at 3.8% in September 2026, up from 3.2% in August, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 3.7%, up from 3.4%. In the , energy made the largest contribution to the annual rate, and in the US the rise came amid a surge in gasoline costs.

Your own shopping may feel different from the headline. Food and drink prices in the UK were rising by only 1.3%, while fuel was jumping. And people tend to focus on commonly bought items and on price rises more than price falls, so felt inflation and the measured figure rarely match exactly.

Challenge · At 3.5% a year, how much does 100 still buy after 10 years? Now slide the rate down to the 2% target and compare.

A simple model: prices rise by the same rate every year. It shows how a steady pace adds up, not where inflation will go.

  1. 1.A headline says UK CPI inflation rose from 3.1% to 3.5%. What does that mean?
  2. 2.Which part of the UK basket made the largest upward push on the annual rate in September 2026?
  3. 3.Why can your own shopping feel more expensive or cheaper than the official 3.5%?

Recap

Inflation is a speed, not a price: 3.5% means the basket costs 3.5% more than a year ago, and the main push in September 2026 was energy.

💡 A trick to remember it · Think of a speedometer, not an odometer: inflation tells you how fast prices are climbing, not how high they already are.

Surprising fact · Fuel was up 29.8% in a year while food was up just 1.3%.
