What runs your code when there's no server to rent?
"Serverless" is a misnomer: the servers are still there. You just never see them, and AWS says its functions' tiny machines boot in milliseconds.
▶ Start the storyYour code runs on a server, but not one you rent, set up or even see. "Serverless" is a misnomer: servers are still used by cloud providers to execute code for developers. The word means that the customer no longer has to , deploy and manage hardware or software resources, apart from providing application code or data. ISO classifies serverless alongside the better-known service categories IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.
A prominent example is AWS Lambda, introduced on 13 November 2014. It is an : developers run code without provisioning or managing servers, and Lambda executes the code in response to events, managing the computing resources automatically. Compare that with EC2 in 2006, which gave you resizable compute capacity but still left you holding the server.
EC2 (2006)
- A web service providing resizable compute capacity in the cloud
Lambda (2014)
- Runs code without provisioning or managing servers
- Runs in response to events
- Resources managed automatically
What actually runs the function? Each Lambda instance runs inside a lightweight, isolated environment powered by Firecracker . AWS claims that, unlike traditional virtual machines, these microVMs launch in milliseconds, which makes rapid and secure function execution possible with a minimal memory footprint. It is the virtual machine idea, shrunk to fit one function.
Nothing in computing is free of trade-offs, though. Serverless does not eliminate complexity, it shifts much of it from the operations team to the development team. Applications are by default locked to a specific cloud vendor. And for sustained or predictable workloads, bulk-provisioned servers can sometimes be more cost-effective than the pay-per-use model typical of serverless platforms.

Recap
Serverless means the servers are the provider's job, not that they are gone: you send code, events trigger it, and it runs in an isolated microVM.
💡 A trick to remember it · Serverless is a taxi, not a car: the engine is still there, but you only ride and pay when you go.
Surprising fact · "Serverless" is a misnomer: servers still run the code.
