Why can one data center use as much electricity as 100,000 homes?

A single data center can draw as much power as 100,000 households, and some under construction will need twenty times that.

▶ Start the story

A typical data center can use as much electricity as 100,000 households, and the largest campuses now under construction are expected to demand roughly twenty times that. The reason is concentration. Cloud data centers frequently contain thousands of servers, all running continuously, plus the cooling systems needed to stop them overheating. Packed together, a modern data center can have a power density more than 100 times that of an ordinary office building.

100,000

households: roughly the electricity a typical data center can consume

The idea is old. Data centers have their roots in the huge computer rooms of the 1940s, typified by , and even then a single needed a great deal of power and had to be cooled to avoid overheating. What changed is how many machines we now ask to run all day, for everyone, everywhere.

Add them up and the numbers get country-sized. The International Energy Agency estimated that data centers used around 415 in 2024, about 1.5% of global electricity. It projects that to more than double by 2030, to around 945 terawatt-hours, slightly more than the entire electricity consumption of Japan today. Two companies, Google and Microsoft, each consumed 24 terawatt-hours in 2024, more than many countries do.

Heat adds to the bill, which is why engineers measure waste. A data center's compares the total power coming in with the power that actually reaches the computers. The average U.S. data center scores 2.0, meaning two watts in for every watt that reaches the machines, while state-of-the-art ones are estimated at roughly 1.2.

Recap

Data centers use huge amounts of electricity because thousands of servers run nonstop and their heat must be removed too, and PUE measures that overhead.

💡 A trick to remember it · A data center is a hundred-thousand-home appetite in a warehouse: servers eat the watts, and the fans eat watts to keep the servers cool.

Surprising fact · A typical data center can use as much electricity as 100,000 households.
