What went wrong at Chernobyl in 1986?
Swedish workers at another plant gave the first alarm, two days before the Soviet Union admitted the accident.

Which one is it?
Chernobyl went wrong because of a risky test on a reactor with a dangerous design quirk. On 26 April 1986, reactor 4 of the Chernobyl plant near , then in the Ukrainian part of the Soviet Union, exploded. The crew was running a test of reactor cooling in blackout conditions, after an accidental drop in reactor power, and the reactor surged out of control. Steam explosions and a meltdown then destroyed the reactor building.
The key flaw was in the Soviet design. In most water-cooled reactors, steam bubbles in the coolant slow the reaction down. In the RBMK, steam bubbles did the opposite: they raised reactivity, a trait called a . Worse, each control rod had a tip, and it was known that pressing the emergency shutdown could at first increase the reaction rate rather than reduce it.
Most water-cooled reactors
- Steam bubbles lower the reaction
- Control rods slow it when inserted
RBMK at Chernobyl
- Steam bubbles raised the reaction
- -tipped rods could first speed it up
Who is to blame has been argued about. The first international report, in 1986, said the main cause was the operators' actions. A revised report in 1992 said it was the reactor's design. Both identified an inadequate safety culture at every level.
The human cost was severe. Of 237 workers hospitalized, 134 had and 28 died within three months. The government set up an 36 hours after the accident and evacuated about 49,000 people, then about 68,000 more. Long-term death estimates range from up to 4,000 to 16,000, depending on who is counting and where.
The world learned of it from a surprising alarm. Two days after the explosion, radiation set off detectors at a Swedish power plant more than 1,000 kilometres away, and the Soviet government only then acknowledged the disaster.

Recap
Chernobyl combined a design that could speed up when it should slow down with a risky test and a weak safety culture.
💡 A trick to remember it · At Chernobyl, bubbles and tipped rods turned the brake into a gas pedal.
Surprising fact · The first outside alarm came from Swedish workers whose own plant's radiation detectors went off.
